Singles and EP's

Michelle's Debut EP "Fight For Her" was released in November 2015. The Title track had been released as a single two weeks before and made it to #1 on the New Zealand Country Itunes Charts before it was knocked off by Carrie Underwood.
The single Fight For Her was Southland EntertainmantAwards, APRA Song of the year in 2015.

The third track on the album , You Should've Known, also won the same award at the 2016 show.

Keep your eyes and ears open, for Michelle is still writing and recording ;)

MICHELLE BECK

Fight For Her

With country music enjoying unprecedented crossover popularity thanks to superstars Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood, southern New Zealand fans don't have to look far to find local heroes.

The likes of Jody Direen, Kayla Mahon, Liv McBride and Jenny Mitchell are flying the flag for country in its many forms, and to that list we can add Michelle Beck.

The young Wairio songstress promised much in the early stages of her career and she's delivered emphatically with her debut CD Fight For Her.

The seven country-rock songs here are honest and engaging, with big hooks tailor-made for radio and lyrics that touch hearts and nerves.  It's an astonishingly assured first step in the industry.

The title track has already enjoyed success, winning the Apra Song of the Year at the 2015 ILT Southland Entertainment Awards and peaking at No 1 on the iTunes Top 20 Country Songs chart in October.

But there's depth right throughout the disc, melodically and lyrically.

Beck soars with the songwriting angels on You Should've Known, for my money an even better song than Fight For Her. From its elegantly restrained beginnings, Beck gently builds to a crescendo in the epic chorus, with lyrics that ache with regret:  "It's been two years since I last called/I can't believe I'm still stuck up in that head of yours after all this time …"

There's nothing contrived about Beck as a singer, or a songwriter. Consistently throughout, she reveals a tuneful intuition that earmarks her as a potential songwriting star and she's doubly blessed with a voice that's naturally true and strong, with pleasing tone and power.

Sound engineer and musician Simon Galt has done a top job of presenting Beck's excellent music in the best possible style. He spent countless hours over the past three years layering the songs at his Man Cave Studio with a little help from musos Tim O'Connor, Simon Kairau and Michelle Roberts, having the smarts not to overdo it. Songs this good speak for themselves, and Galt lets them breathe.

Music careers don't usually begin with the artist fully formed and so comfortable in their own skin.  But if Michelle Beck has more like this to come, and the right people hear it, exciting possibilities lie on her horizon.
